omega 8006 masticating juicer

Shoppers oftentimes get confused about the Omega Juicer model numbers. The truth is they don't make a lick of sense! The Omega 8004 and Omega 8006 are identical juicers. They have the same interior mechanical parts. The only difference between them is the 8004 features a body made of white plastic and the 8006 features a snazzy chrome-plated body.

The 8004 has a msrp of $259 and the 8006 has an msrp of $299. The difference in price is due to the chrome body costing more to manufacture than the white plastic body.

We didn't want to do two reviews of an identical juicer that just featured a different body, so we've combined our review of the Omega 8004 and the Omega 8006 together into this one review. All right, with that out of the way, let's get started.

The Masticating Omega 8006 Juicer is full of surprises. Typically masticating juicers (like the well known Champion Juicer) produce a high quality juice but at the expense of laborous clean-up time. The Omega 8006 turns this stereo-type on it's head though.

It is intuitively designed with small parts and a surprising lack of nooks and crannies where juicer pulp gets stuck. Clean-up time with this baby truly only takes a matter of a minute or two. It's on par with the speedy clean-up time of the Breville centrifugal juicer line. Amazing!

Clean up involves rinsing the auger, auger cap, feed chute funnel, funnel top, juice collector, pulp collector, and screen. The pieces assemble and disassemble quite easily and rinse off quickly. The Omega 8006 comes with a handy brush for cleaning the screen, which is always the most time-consuming part of juicer clean ups.

We're also impressed with Omega for carrying a metal body masticating juicer. That chrome plating means no more discolored orange stained juicer lurking in the kitchen cabinet. It will look new for years to come and shine brightly with a quick polish of the dish towel. Thanks Omega!

Juicing with the Omega 8006 juicer is easy as well. Since it is a masticating juicer, it does create juice more slowly than a quick blasting centrifugal juicer, however for a masticator it is very simple.

Most masticators and triturators require a lot of pressure exerted on the feed chute plunger to cause enough friction with the auger to start the juicing process. The Omega 8006 Juicer on the other hand, will actually start chewing up carrots with no pressure from the plunger at all. Pretty amazing! You will need to use the plunger with most produce, but it doesn't require the herculean strength of some other masticating juicers.

We're impressed!

All in all we give the 8006 Omega juicer our top score, 5 limes out of 5 for our ease of use juicer reviews rating.

Juicing Performance

What about performance? Does it actually do everything the manufacturer claims? The Omega 8006 Juicer kicks out a glass of juice with ease, in addition to it's extra homogonizing functions such as sorbets, nut butters, baby foods, etc.

The only downfall is it does require some "rotating" with certain kinds of produce. While it will do greens and wheatgrass quite well, it does best if you switch on and off between, say, a soft leafy green like a chard leaf, followed by something hard like a carrot. Soft. Hard. Soft. Hard. That's the way it goes.

It's not much of a downfall, unless you plan on juicing "just" a glass of green juice. If you're wanting to juice straight greens, you're still better off with a dedicated wheatgrass juicer. But for 95% of folks, since it's most common to add a dash of greens to a mixed vegetable juice, this baby is going to do great with your green wishes.

A big plus for performance is its ability to handle citrus. A lot of masticating style juicers have a hard time with citrus because it is so juicy and fibrous. The Omega 8006 handles the job though. Another impressive feature!

So what's the juice yield like? Far superior to the Champion and centrifugal juicers. You're going to see dry fluffy pulp at the end of the juicing project... just the way it's supposed to be. Another benefit above and beyond anything you'll find in a centrifugal juicer is the extremely low juice heat and lack of froth.

Your glass of fresh squeezed juice will be cool when you're done, and without the "foam on top" phenomenon you see with so many juicers. This is beneficial not only for the "taste factor" but because it retains a high percentage of the nutrients and enzymes.

It uses the standard slow auger to create the juice, and operates at a nice, slow 80 rpms and has a 250 watt motor... perfect for a masticator. (Centrifugal juicers on the other hand, work better with bigger watt motors and high rpms).

We're fans! We give the Omega 8006 Juicer 4 limes out of 5 for our performance juicer reviews rating.

Durability

So the Omega 8006 Juicer is easy to use, easy to clean, versatile, has low juice heat and froth and high juice yield. Sounds like a dream come true. The last factor to consider is does it stand the test of time?

With one of the longest warranties on the market, 15 years, Omega stands behind this juicer. We love to see companies that are willing to stick their necks out with a good long warranty. It's a sign of serious quality in design, and confidence in their product.

The Omega 8006, as well as all the other Omega masticating juicers, is durable. The 8006 (and 8004) features an upgraded auger. The previous models (8003 and 8005) had a melamine auger and they have replaced it with a ulem auger. (different kinds of very hard, industrial strength plastics). They state that the ulem auger is 8 times stronger than the melamine version. A good upgrade!

In fact, the auger on the Omega masticators seems to be it's only flaw. A handful of people (a small handful, but still) have experienced chipping and scratching of their augers (both the old melamine and new ulem styles). They still function to juice with a chip or scratch, however, folks have been concerned about where the little chips and scratched pieces end up... in the juice?

No one wants to drink plastic! The one recurring theme we discovered was that folks who experienced this were adding frozen items to their juicer. If you stay away from anything frozen, let it thaw first, you shouldn't have a problem. We do want to restate again that this flaw has only been reported by a handful of folks and most users have not had this problem at all. Don't let it scare you off from a great juicer!

The upside of the auger issue is that Omega appears to be very proactive at replacing them free of charge. So if this should happen to you, you most likely won't need to pay for the replacement! A nice touch... It helps to buy a juicer from a company dedicated to making only juicers...

There have been some reports that Omega's customer service is slightly scattered. Folks have reported long waits for parts (a couple months at times) and "lost orders". Sounds like they're growing quicker than their customer service department can keep up. Folks do say that they are friendly and want to help, just that they seem disorganized.

For durability and reliablity we wavered between 4 and 5 limes. This little juicer will be around for a long time, kicking out fresh glasses of juice for you and your family. There is the little issue with the auger though. Not a major downfall, but in the end it was enough to deduct a lime. Our final tally? 4 limes out of 5 for our durability juicer reviews rating.

Who should Buy It

We love the Omega 8006 Juicer. It's dependable, easy to clean, offers tremendous juicing variety and still manages to look cute and sassy in the process. If you're price range is $300 we absolutely recommend the 8006. It's got better juice yield and nutrition retention than a comparably priced centrifugal, but boasts the efficiency of a centrifugal. Definitely the best of both worlds.

If you're absolutely committed to some serious "greens only" juicing, the Green Star Elite Juicer is a better choice, but the step up in price is high: from $299 for the Omega 8006 to a range of $529-$629 for the Green Star.

Otherwise... go with the Omega 8006 Juicer(or the white version known as Omega 8004). If $299 is too steep for your juicing committment right now, you're going to want to check out some of the centrifugal style juicers. There aren't many masticators or triturators for a lower price than this baby.

Our final tally? 4 1/2 limes out of 5 for our overall juicer reviews rating. In fact, we give the Omega 8006 Juicer our Top Choice award for its price range.
