I start every day with a glass of lemon juice and water. I can just hear everybody thinking, "Why on earth would he do that to himself?" Why indeed.
I have always liked lemon juice. Even as a child, I would slip into the refrigerator and take a nip from the lemon bottle. Like someone on a recovery plan falling off the wagon. My little secret...
Now I'm am a bit more bold about my lemon habit. I live in Florida which is blessed with a great climate for citrus fruits, including lemons. I walk out to the tree in the backyard, gather whatever the tree has dropped for me that day, and juice it right into my trusty Guinness mug. (Little secret: even though I'm really into health, I still love drinking a beer every now and then. Besides, it's a great mug.)
I add about 16 ounces of purified water to the juiced lemons, stir, and drink. I'm aware of the fact that many would find this unpleasant, but I look forward to it every day. It is my awareness of how good this habit is for me that drives me. Plus, as I mentioned before, I really like it.
Freshly squeezed lemons are loaded with all the good stuff you would expect from citrus; vitamin C, bioflavonoids like rutin and hesperidin, potassium, and enzymes, those all important catalysts.
Even more than that, fresh juiced lemons reduce acidosis and encourage alkalinity. Being alkaline is one of the single most important factors in long-term health maintenance. The cool thing about that is following a diet rich in fruits and vegetables (especially leafy greens), is a sure way to stay alkaline. Eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables is also the best way to be healthy.
Store bought lemon fruit juice that has been pasteurized is not quite as healthy. The pasteurization process, which is basically just heating, inactivates enzymes. Enzymes are the catalysts which help every other metabolic function do what it does. By drinking fresh juices, you supercharge your body with living enzymes.
Whole, fresh, ripe, raw, organic fruits and vegetables are all rich in enzymes as well as other vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and phytochemicals our bodies use for fuel and cellular regeneration.
Drinking lemon fruit juice and water first thing in the morning helps with hydration, immune function, detoxification, and energy. If its too tart for your taste buds, add a little raw honey or stevia. It will also help prime your digestion for eating solid foods.
That is just the beginning of all the things you can do with fresh lemon juice. It also enhances other flavors, slows oxidation of foods (add to guacomole and it will stay fresh longer), and makes a great skin toner.
The best way to be happy is to be healthy. Enjoy.
