Lemon Juice DetoxIn my work as a nutritionist, many people have asked me about the Lemon Juice Detox, also known as the Lemon Juice Maple Syrup Diet or Master Cleanse. What is the Lemon Juice Detox?
As with any detox, it's important for you to listen to your body and make decisions through logic and intuition. I've guided many people through this cleanse and seen really great results. I've done it myself for 3 or 4 days at a time and, overall, I really like it. Judging from my experience as a nutritionist, I am impressed. So what is the Lemon Juice Diet? The Lemon Juice Detox is a short term method for helping your body remove toxins. It involves abstaining from eating solid food for 3 to 10 days while drinking a mixture of water, lemon juice, maple syrup and cayenne. It sounds kinda weird but it's really not bad at all. I actually like the stuff and actively crave it every once in a while. The concept is that the fresh lemon juice serves as a source of nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and enzymes. The maple syrup provides additional vitamins and minerals as well as a source of glucose, also known as blood sugar. The cayenne pepper nourishes the gastrointestinal tract, reduces any nausea that may result from toxins being released, and is a source of nutrients for the heart. An important thing to take into consideration with the Lemon Juice Detox, and with many naturopathic healing techniques, is synergy. Synergy is when a combination of things provides more of a result than the individual components would. Think of it like a good recipe. All the ingredients may be good by themselves, but when put together by a skilled chef, the flavors synergize and make something truly remarkable. So, without further explanation, here's how to do the Lemon Juice Detox... Lemon Juice Maple Syrup DietStep One: Eat really clean for at least 3 or 4 days. By this I mean to eat a primarily fruit and vegetable based diet with minimal amounts of meat, refined grains, and dairy. You'll also want to avoid processed food, junk food, and fast food. Fresh fruits and vegetables are naturally higher in nutrients and phytonutrients. Eating clean for a few days will give your body a headstart on the cleanse. While going through this step, go to a health food store and get the ingredients. For every day of the detox, you will need 80 ounces of pure water, 5 lemons (ideally organic), 20 tablespoons of Grade B Maple Syrup, and 1 teaspoon of cayenne pepper powder. Step Two: On every day of the cleanse, put together enough ingredients for a days worth: 80 oz. water, freshly squeezed juice of 5 organic lemons, 20 tablespoons (10 ounces) grade B Maple Syrup, and 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper powder. I have always found it helpful to mix it up in a gallon jug. If you have a glass container, use it. Otherwise, plastic is fine. During the course of the day, drink 10 8 ounce glasses of the lemon juice, maple syrup detox drink. Step Three: Go for as many days as you feel comfortable. I have seen good results with anywhere from 3 to 10 days. I have also known people who have gone for 42 days and felt great. Everybody is going to respond in their own way. As always, pay attention to your body. Step Four: In order to transition back into normal eating habits, eat clean for at least 2-3 days before resuming a healthy, balanced diet. There are many variations on the Lemon Juice Detox. I have seen it called the Lemon Juice Maple Syrup Diet, The Master Cleanse, and the Lemonade Diet or Lemonade Cleanse. It's a good idea to look around online and ask at health food stores for other opinions and experiences. It is always a good idea to educate yourself when making changes to your lifestyle habits. I would encourage you to enlist the help of your primary health care provider for advice or assistance. Enjoy your cleanse.
