Question: Can Breville Juicers juice wheatgrass and other greens? This question has popped up frequently enough that we figured we'd write a little page about it.
Answer: Not really. Wheatgrass in particular is extremely fibrous and many juicer brands have difficulty producing any juice from the wheat grass blades. The Breville Juice Fountain juicers are no exception. They are centrifugal style juicers and there are no centrifugal juicers that can effectively handle wheatgrass.
The reason is because of the style of extraction. Centrifugal juicers like the Brevilles have a powerful, high rpm, high speed motor that controls the cutting blade. The cutting blade chops and cuts at very high speeds which makes it ideal for firm fruits and vegetables. For example with a carrot the cutter has a firm piece of root vegetable to chop and cut.
Wheatgrass on the other hand, is a grass. It bends and sways rather than being a firm object. That sway causes it to slip over and under the cutting blade in centrifugal style machines. The blade just can't get a good grip on the wheatgrass.
Instead of a fast cutting action, what wheatgrass needs is a slow squeezing action that literally squeezes the juice out of the grass fiber. While Breville Juicers are excellent for many different produce items, the centrifugal style of the Juice Fountains just can't do it all... especially when it comes to wheatgrass.
Yes you can extract juice out of other types of greens with Breville Juicers. Common greens that people often juice include Parsley, Cilantro, Kale, Collard Greens, Dandelion Greens, Mustard Greens, Red leaf lettuce, Green Leaf lettuce, Romaine lettuce, Endive, Escarole, Spinach and Cabbage.
Some Breville Juice Fountain models handle the task better than others. While all of the Breville Juice Fountains can extract juice from greens, the Breville Juice Fountain Elite extracts the most juice from greens.
If you are only planning on juicing a bit of greens into your daily glass of vegetable juice, the Breville Juice Fountains will be adequate for the task. When you consider their fast juicing time and quick clean up, they can be an excellent choice.
However, if you want to juice extensive greens or plan on juicing wheatgrass consider a twin gear juicer like the Green Star Juicer which can juice all your fruits, veggies, greens and wheatgrass. The other option is a dedicated juicer just for wheatgrass like a manual wheatgrass juicer.
Do we still consider Breville Juice Extractors a good choice despite their inability to juice wheatgrass? Absolutely! It all depends on what you want to get out of a juicer. Check out our Reviews of Breville Juice Fountains to read up on the specifics of each model.
